Economic activity in Brgy. Mahanub, Gigaquit, Surigao del Norte, has increased, with the help of a trading center built by USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program. Previously, farmers and traders displayed their goods on makeshift stalls or on sacks by the roadside. The trading center, which was built under GEM’s Barangay Infrastructure Project (BIP) in partnership with the municipal government, provides a sheltered and organized space in which to conduct business, creating more economic opportunities for residents and generates additional income for the local government through the collection of users’ fees. The trading center is one of more than 1,170 community infrastructure projects built by GEM in conflict-affected areas in Mindanao. Published in Daily Zamboanga Times, February 9, 2011 |
