Improving Trade in Western Mindanao

President of the Northern Mindanao Vegetable Industry Council gives a lecture at a recent vegetable marketing and quality improvement seminar.

Marcelino Remotigue, president of the Northern Mindanao Vegetable Industry Council (NorminVeggies) explains the advantages of "clustering” the harvests of individual growers to create economies of scale, at a recent vegetable marketing and quality improvement seminar in Dipolog City. The training was organized by the Zamboanga del Norte Provincial Agriculture Office through its Integrated Hillylands Green Rehabilitation and Livelihood Program (HI-GREEN), with support from USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program, which is being implemented under the oversight of the Mindanao Economic Development Council. The two-day event provided growers from 18 municipalities in the province with updates on the latest farming technologies, and with introductions to prospective buyers. Through its business growth development component, the GEM Program has been helping vegetable associations across Mindanao to increase their competitiveness, particularly in accessing new inter-regional markets.
