Traders, students, and other residents of Barangay Sengal, in Lamitan, Basilan, can now get to the city center more quickly and safely because of a concrete deck footbridge built by USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program, in partnership with the city government. The footbridge, which has reduced the travel distance from Sengal to the commercial district by three kilometers, is among 830 GEM Barangay Infrastructure Projects constructed with local partners in support of peace and economic development in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) and conflict-affected areas in Mindanao. GEM is being implemented under the oversight of the Mindanao Economic Development Council. (GEM)
